Inherited & Salvaged: Family Portraits from the NUS Museum Straits Chinese Collection is published by the NUS Baba House. It features portraits of overseas Chinese residents in Malaya and the Dutch East Indies at the turn of the 20th century. Essays discuss the painters who operated in this region and the varied forms of their artistic productions. The book also includes a survey of the photographic studios that emerged in early 20th century Singapore, consumer reception to the photographed image and its impact on painted portraits.
